WHEN SILENCE PROTECTS POWER, WHO SPEAKS FOR THE DEAD?

Synopsis

Echoes of Justice is a hybrid documentary told through my personal journey as a filmmaker investigating the realities of extrajudicial killings and police brutality in Kenya. As I navigate Nairobi's communities, I encounter families, survivors, activists, and young people whose lives have been forever changed by state violence.

Through intimate testimonies, cinematic reenactments, and observational storytelling, the film moves beyond the headlines to reveal the human cost of injustice grief, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of truth. More than an investigation, Echoes of Justice is a personal act of remembrance that amplifies voices too often left unheard, challenging audiences to reflect on the price of silence and the urgent need for accountability.

THE FILM

In the heart of Nairobi, where silence often protects power and fear lives in the shadows of everyday life, ECHOES OF JUSTICE confronts the devastating reality of extrajudicial killings, police brutality and the human cost of unchecked power in Kenya.

Blending cinematic fiction, documentary testimony, observational footage and poetic narration, the film follows people whose lives exist within communities where violence, poverty, fear and survival constantly collide.

At the centre of the story is Bakari.

Young. Restless. Funny. Angry.

A product of a world that demands survival before it offers opportunity.

As pressure, temptation and violence begin to close around him, Bakari is pulled into a cycle much bigger than himself.

Around him are families searching for answers.

Mothers carrying photographs of sons who never returned home.

Activists documenting names before they are forgotten.

Young people learning that sometimes being seen can make you a target.

ECHOES OF JUSTICE is not simply a film about death.

It is a film about memory.

About power.

About fear.

And about what happens when a generation refuses to remain silent.

THIS IS NOT JUST A STORY.

IT IS AN ECHO.

SOME REFUSE TO STAY SILENT.

SOME STORIES ARE BURIED.

For generations, Mathare has existed within the contradictions of Nairobi.

MATHARE

NAIROBI, KENYA.

Mathare is more than a location in ECHOES OF JUSTICE. The story of ECHOES OF JUSTICE could not be separated from Mathare.

The community carries many of the realities explored within the film. Police violence. Youth unemployment. Crime. Political neglect. Community activism.

And the complicated decisions young people make when survival becomes an everyday negotiation.

Mathare Social Justice Centre and other community-led movements have spent years documenting human rights violations and organising against extrajudicial killings.

Their work represents a simple but powerful act:

REMEMBERING THE NAMES.

ECHOES OF JUSTICE continues that conversation through cinema.

The film does not claim to speak for Mathare.

It creates space for Mathare to speak.

Director Biography

Tony De Gigz is a Kenyan filmmaker, cinematographer, and visual storyteller based in Nairobi, whose work explores themes of justice, identity, memory, and social inequality through emotionally driven cinematic narratives. With a strong background in documentary filmmaking and visual production, he is passionate about telling authentic African stories that amplify unheard voices and challenge systems of silence.

His filmmaking style blends raw realism with poetic visual language, often combining observational documentary techniques, atmospheric cinematography, and intimate human storytelling. Drawing inspiration from the streets and communities of Nairobi, his work focuses on the emotional truths behind contemporary social issues, particularly the lived experiences of marginalized youth and communities affected by violence and systemic injustice.

As the director of Echoes of Justice, he seeks to create more than a documentary — a powerful cinematic experience that preserves testimony, sparks dialogue, and confronts the realities of extrajudicial killings in Kenya. Through a hybrid documentary approach that merges vérité storytelling with stylized reenactments and reflective narration, the film aims to bridge activism and cinema while honoring the resilience of those demanding accountability and change.

Beyond directing, he works across cinematography, editing, and creative production, collaborating with artists, organizations, and brands on projects that combine strong visual aesthetics with meaningful storytelling. His growing body of work reflects a commitment to socially conscious filmmaking and a belief in cinema as a tool for memory, resistance, and transformation.
